Aamir and Asoutosh did India proud Apropos of the editorial, 'Picture Perfect' (March 28), Bollywood's blockbuster, 'Lagaan' did not give India the fame in the form of Oscar that it sought. Selfish ambition is a terrible trait that can manifest itself in an ugly passion for the "best seats," and for personal recognition. It can cause us to dominate social and commercial situations and insist on telling our stories instead of listening to others. Every individual (or for that matter even a country as in the present case) wants to be noticed, to be prominent and to be in the limelight. Aamir Khan and Asoutosh Gowarikar's graceful and dignified behaviour at the 74th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, the 24th March 2002, after losing the Best Foreign Film Oscar did India proud. They have shown the world that it is possible for Indians to be content when others are elevated above them, and that India can rejoice when another country is preferred over it, and that we give credit to others without insisting on getting it all for ourselves. There is no limit to what Aamir Khan and Asoutosh Gowarikar can achieve in the film world because they do not care who gets the credit. |
