| Lagaan: A film designed to win |
|
Today, I am more into costume designing because fashion designing is only about massaging egos and making stars look good. Costume designing is about dressing the character to recreate a different era. Lagaan is a landmark film since it shows that one can take a risk, have original thinking and then achieve success. Change guarantees new insights. Gandhi was not a costume extravaganza, yet it won several awards. In Hollywood, the buzz for Lagaan is very strong. Even its costumes have been the subject of conversation. When Lagaan was nominated, Ashutosh chose his Bhanutai and I am glad. The sherwani I have designed is made of raw silk with the buttons and collar embroidered in white. Since most will
turn up for the Oscars in black ties, our boys in sherwanis will surely
stand out. |
